The Language Before Words

How does human meaning take shape before words? And what can truly be shared between subjects who have never met, who speak different languages, who live in distant cultures?

Language Before Words takes these questions seriously through an unprecedented convergence. Four intellectual traditions of the twentieth century — elaborated in fields with no apparent contact — designate the same fundamental operation on the human psyche and on its productions. Wilfred Bion, with his alpha function and his geometrical taxonomy of psychic transformations. Carl Gustav Jung, in his rigorous formulation of the archetype as form without content. Alexandre Grothendieck, with the mathematics of toposes that thinks the discrete and the continuous together. And the endolinguistics founded in 1952 by Christiane S. Meulemans and José Ángel Elias Fernández y Cuevas, which studies the deep consonantal structures of linguistic macrosystems.

The book articulates, in twenty-two chapters and four movements, what these four architectures say together: that the shared unconscious is not a reservoir of universal images, but a field of structural constraints that predispose the forms of meaning without dictating their contents, and that operate under three qualitatively distinct regimes — rigid, projective, hallucinatory. From the maternal gift of thinkability to the cohomology of obstructions, from the shared endorhythm to the three ascetics of the invisible (Jung, Bion, Grothendieck), the book proposes a crossed itinerary among clinical work, language and mathematical structure.
