Qualic Metaphysics

In recent years, the term “quantum metaphysics” has gained popularity in pseudo-spiritual, motivational, and even therapeutic discourse. It is often invested with meanings that lack philosophical or scientific rigor. Quantum mechanics, as a branch of physics, is concerned with the behavior of subatomic particles: discrete, quantifiable, and measurable systems described within mathematical frameworks. To call non-scientific interpretations of these phenomena “metaphysics” is to confuse distinct epistemic orders—a conflation of the measurable (quantum) with the speculative (metaphysical) that results in a category error.

Metaphysics, in its strictest philosophical sense, is not concerned with particles or measurable forms of energy, but with that which lies beyond the physical as such. Its object is not what can be counted, but what is qualitatively experienced. In response to the misuse of the term “quantum,” we propose a qualic metaphysics: a philosophy of qualia—deep qualities as felt, perceived, and experienced—in contrast to quanta, discrete and fragmentary units.
