About this book

Every society speaks on two levels at once. Beneath the surface of public discourse — political speeches, platform posts, market signals, ritual formulas, subcultural slang — there runs a second layer of meaning, calibrated to be legible to insiders and opaque, deniable, or invisible to everyone else. Cryptological Sociolinguistics (CSS) is the science of that second layer: how hidden messages are encoded inside ordinary ones, how they travel, how they are decoded, and how the analyst can study them without falling into paranoid over-reading.

This book is the foundational and methodological treatise of the discipline. It establishes CSS as a field in its own right by carefully demarcating it from endolinguistics on one side and from esotericism, occultism, and oracular interpretation on the other. Building on the metaphor of cryptography — Shannon, Kerckhoffs, asymmetric keys, hashes, zero-knowledge proofs, side channels, steganography — it develops a rigorous vocabulary for the codes that organize social life: dog-whistles, plausible deniability, the hide effect, algospeak and Aesopian language, criptolects, and covert signaling.

Across six parts and twenty-nine chapters, the book moves from the problem and its theoretical canon (semiotics and hermeneutics, pragmatics, framing, the sociology of secrecy) to its fields of application: geopolitics and media cascades, platforms and AI, occult and secret groups, markets, and subcultures. It closes with a working protocol, an ethics of interpretation, and a frank account of the discipline's limits.

Two threads run throughout. The human thread: the human mind is more fundamental than any medium that carries it. The threshold thread: CSS studies the passage between the esoteric and the exoteric without pronouncing on the internal validity of any body of knowledge. And one golden rule governs the method: no hidden intention is attributed without falsifiable empirical evidence.

Theoretical, didactic, and at moments philosophical, the book is written for linguists, social scientists, analysts of political and digital discourse, and any reader who suspects that what is being said is not quite what is being communicated.
